Marie Spartali fue una de las mas importantes pintoras de la Escuela de los Prerrafaelitas. Nacida en 1844 de padres griegos pasó su juventud en Londres, porque estos eran ricos mercantes que se habían establecido en esa capital años antes y llevaban una vida de lujo. Mas tarde y ya casada con el americano que era Corresponsal y Pintor William J. Spillman, vivía con el y sus hijos entre Italia y Londres con ocasionales viajes a Estados Unidos. Era la única prerrafaelita británica que trabajo también desde America.

Se dice que era de gran belleza e inteligencia, pero lo que sin duda tenia era un talento muy especial para la pintura. Sus cuadros de mujeres en ropajes clásicos tienen una notable influencia de la Italia renacentista. Igual se puede decir de sus cuadros con personajes varios situados en paisajes que nos recuerdan a los italianos del siglo 15 y 16. Entre ello destacan elementos arquitectónicos clásicos, como frondosa vegetación, con mucho amor por el detalle.

Su obra ademas esta llena de símbolos y alegorías, colores, tenues, paisajes misteriosos, todo muy típico del Prerafaelismo. Ella es una digna representante de ese movimiento tan romántico.

Marie Spartali

Marie Spartali was one of the most important painters of the School of the Pre-Raphaelites. Born in 1844 from Greek parents she spent her youth in London, because they were rich merchants, who had settled in that capital years before and led a life of luxury. Later and already married to the American, who was Correspondent and Painter William J. Spillman, she lived with him and her children between Italy and London with occasional trips to the United States. She was the only British pre-Raphaelite who also worked from America.

It is said that she was of great beauty and intelligence, but what she undoubtedly had was a very special talent for painting. Her paintings of women in classic clothes have a remarkable influence of the Italian Renaissance. The same can be said of her outdoor paintings with persons shown in landscapes that remind us of the Italian ones of the 15th and 16th century. Among them, classical architectural elements stand out, such as also lush vegetation, with a lot of love for detail.

Her work is also full of symbols and allegories, tenuous colours, mysterious landscapes, all very typical of the Pre-Raphaelites. She is a worthy representative of that romantic movement.
